Lake Natron is a shallow soda lake in the Rift Valley close to the Kenyan border, a raw landscape of salt flats and volcanic hills far from the usual safari routes. Its alkaline waters are one of the most important breeding grounds for lesser flamingos in the world.
Above the lake rises Ol Doinyo Lengai, the Maasai “Mountain of God”, an active volcano that fit hikers can climb overnight to reach the crater at sunrise. Easier walks lead up the Engare Sero gorge to a waterfall and to ancient human footprints preserved in volcanic mud. Lake Natron is reached by road from Arusha or the Serengeti, and it is hot, so plan for early starts.
