Overview

The easiest way to add a real safari to a Zanzibar beach holiday. A short flight takes you to Mikumi National Park, where open grassland full of elephants, giraffes, buffalo, zebras and lions makes for excellent game viewing.

You spend a night at a lodge in the park, with afternoon and early-morning game drives, and you’re back on Zanzibar by the afternoon of day two.

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day01 Zanzibar – fly to Mikumi National Park

We collect you from your hotel in Zanzibar in the morning for the short flight to Mikumi National Park, Tanzania's most accessible safari park from the coast.

Your guide meets you at the airstrip and you head straight out on an afternoon game drive across the Mkata floodplain, often compared to the Serengeti for its open grassland. Look for lions, elephants, giraffes, buffalo, zebras and wildebeest, and stop at the hippo pool.

You check in to your lodge in the park for dinner and the night.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time for this safari?

Northern Tanzania is good all year. The long dry season (June to October) is best for general game viewing, January to March is calving season in the southern Serengeti, and the April–May rains bring green landscapes and lower prices.

Can I change the accommodation or add days?

Yes. Every itinerary can be tailored: upgrade or change lodges, add extra nights, or combine your safari with Zanzibar or a Kilimanjaro climb. Tell us what you have in mind when you enquire.

What should I pack?

Light, neutral-coloured layers, a warm fleece for early mornings (the Ngorongoro rim gets cold), a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent, binoculars and a camera with a spare battery. Soft bags pack into safari vehicles and light aircraft more easily than hard suitcases.
