North of Zanzibar lies Pemba, the quieter and greener island of the archipelago. Hilly clove plantations, mangroves and small fishing villages give it an unhurried feel, and it receives only a fraction of Zanzibar’s visitors.
Pemba is best known for its diving and snorkelling: steep reef walls and clear water attract experienced divers, and Misali Island is a favourite for a day on the water. On land, the Ngezi Forest is home to the Pemba flying fox, a fruit bat found only here. Pemba is reached by short flights or ferries from Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam.
