Lalibela’s churches were carved downwards into solid rock more than 800 years ago, and they are still places of worship today. The eleven churches, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are linked by tunnels and trenches, and the cross-shaped Church of St George is one of Africa’s most extraordinary buildings.
Visiting during a religious festival such as Genna (Ethiopian Christmas) or Timket (Epiphany), when pilgrims fill the churches, is unforgettable.
