Danakil Depression

Colourful hot springs, salt caravans and volcanoes.

The Danakil Depression, far below sea level in Ethiopia’s Afar region, is one of the hottest and most otherworldly places on Earth. At Dallol, hot springs have painted the ground in brilliant yellows, greens and oranges.

Watch camel caravans carrying slabs of salt from the flats of Lake Asale, and — conditions permitting — climb Erta Ale volcano, known for its lava lake. Trips are adventurous, travel in convoy with local guides, and run in the cooler months only.

Highlights

  • Dallol’s colourful hydrothermal fields
  • Salt caravans at Lake Asale
  • Erta Ale volcano (activity varies)
  • Afar culture

Things to do

  • Guided 4x4 expedition

  • Salt-flat visits

Frequently asked questions

How hard is a Danakil trip?
It is an adventure rather than a comfortable tour: very hot, basic camping and long drives. It suits travellers in good health who are happy with simple conditions.
Is it safe to travel to Ethiopia?
Some regions of Ethiopia are covered by government travel advisories that change over time. We check current conditions and official advice before confirming any itinerary, and only plan trips to areas that are open to visitors.
